Couples/Marital Mediation Training and Supervised Practicum
Couples Mediation is for couples who need help resolving practical disputes so that they can move forward together. It uses dispute resolution techniques to help married or unmarried couples identify, address, and resolve conflicts in their relationship. Mediation can also be a step towards reconciliation in order to avoid divorce or it can be used to strengthen a stable relationship by breaking impasse around financial or other relationship decisions. It is also appropriate for business partners, for example partners in a restaurant.
You will have the opportunity to gain hands-on Couples/Marital Mediation experience through our Basic Training in Couples/Marital Mediation and Supervised Practicum. You will also learn the techniques of Discernment Mediation, which is used to help couples decide whether or not to stay together.
The Basic Training in Couples/Marital Mediation will cover the fundamental issues starting with differentiating Couples Mediation from Couples Therapy, Techniques that mediators need to develop to be a successful Couples/Marital Mediator, and learning the techniques of Discernment Mediation, and how to apply them when helping couples decide if they should stay in the relationship or not. The Mediator’s goal is to help the couple reach a conclusion within a reasonable period of time. The training will take place on Tuesday, January 14 and 21, 2025 from 4-6 PM ET. The fee for this training is $400.
The Practicum will meet via Zoom on Tuesdays from 4-6 PM ET for 20 weeks starting on January 28 following the Basic Training. In the Practicum, students will work together as co-mediators with actual couples and receive feedback from our directors, Ken Neumann, Ana-Lisa Gertner, and Donna Petrucelli. The fee is $2,500. The fee for alumni who have completed our Divorce Mediation Supervised Practicum is $2,500 for both the Basic Training and the Practicum. The fees can be paid over the course of the program.
